Dental, Vision, Hearing, OTC & Transportation Benefits

Many D-SNPs offer supplemental benefits beyond standard Medicare. These extras can improve quality of life but vary widely by plan. Always check your plan's specific benefit details.

Dental Benefits in D-SNPs

Original Medicare generally does not cover routine dental care. Many D-SNPs fill this gap with preventive services (cleanings, exams, X-rays) and sometimes restorative work (fillings, extractions, dentures). Annual dollar limits are common.

Check whether your plan uses a dental network, requires prior authorization for major services, and covers dentures or implants. Benefit levels can range from basic preventive care to comprehensive coverage.

Vision and Hearing Coverage

Vision benefits often include annual eye exams and an allowance for eyeglasses or contact lenses. Hearing benefits may cover hearing exams and partial payment toward hearing aids, which Original Medicare does not cover for most people.

Some plans partner with specific retailers or mail-order providers. Using in-network vision or hearing providers typically maximizes your benefit.

Over-the-Counter (OTC) Allowances

OTC allowances provide a set monthly or quarterly amount for health-related products—pain relievers, first aid supplies, vitamins, and more. You typically order through the plan's catalog, website, or app, or shop at participating retailers.

Unused OTC funds often do not roll over to the next period. Track your balance and use it before it expires. Eligible products vary by plan.

Transportation Benefits

Non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) helps members get to doctor appointments, pharmacies, and sometimes other health-related destinations. Plans may offer a set number of one-way trips per year.

Schedule rides in advance through the plan's transportation vendor. Emergency transportation is covered separately under Medicare's emergency benefit—not through the NEMT allowance.

Making the Most of Supplemental Benefits

Review your plan's benefit summary at the start of each year. Set calendar reminders for dental cleanings, eye exams, and OTC ordering. Ask your care coordinator if additional benefits like meal delivery or fitness programs are available.

Benefit details are plan-specific. SubsidyCheck describes common benefit types but cannot confirm what your specific plan offers—refer to your Evidence of Coverage.

Frequently asked questions

Are supplemental benefits the same in every D-SNP?

No. Two D-SNPs in the same county can offer very different supplemental packages. Compare plans during AEP to find the benefits that matter most to you.

Can I use OTC benefits for any store purchase?

Usually only through the plan's approved catalog or participating retailers. Random store purchases are typically not reimbursed.

Does Medicaid also cover dental and vision?

Some states cover adult dental and vision through Medicaid. If both Medicaid and your D-SNP offer these benefits, coordination rules determine which pays first.

What if I use all my transportation trips?

Once you exhaust your annual allowance, you are responsible for arranging and paying for additional rides. Some community organizations offer free transportation for seniors.
